Mia's Katy Perry Costume.

A few months ago, Mia told me that she wanted to be Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time for Halloween. Me, being the impulse buyer that I am, hopped on Etsy and scoured the site for the costume of my 3 year old's dreams. I bought it, it was shipped to me and Mia loved it... for a week. Levi and I also planned on being characters from Adventure Time too. But our plans were foiled. Mia loves Katy Perry or "Kerry Perry" as she used to call her. I think I might have even mentioned it on here how obsessed she is. So of course I should have known that once we bought the Katy Perry movie that she would change her mind.
No more Princess Bubblegum. "Mommy, you can sell that costume!" Is what she said. Because she wants to be Katy Perry. Of course I was upset that I wasted money on the other costume, but I was a little more mad at myself for the impulse purchase. So Levi and I told her she could be Katy Perry but she couldn't A) wear a cupcake bra or a bra with any other kind of sweet treats on it, or B) change her mind and want another costume. That's it! She can't change her mind again! If she doesn't want to be Katy Perry, tough titties!
Okay, so I didn't say tough titties to my daughter. Or did I?
Moving on to the construction of said Katy Perry costume.
I decided that she would wear the candy dot costume that Katy Perry wears in the California Gurls music video. Because it seemed the easiest.
I started out with two yards of felt that I bought at Walmart for $9.98
( I only needed one yard)
I measured Mia and cut the height and width to size. Which ended up being a big rectangle.
I hemmed the top and bottom.
Then I pinned the edges to the right side and sewed it into a big tube.
Next I made two mini tubes for the straps.
I pinned them to the outside of the dress and sewed them on.
Once that was done I turned my dress inside out and it was finished!
So easy, right?
The next step was adding the candy buttons to the straps.
All I did was hot glue them on.

The next part was the hardest part for me. The styrofoam balls.
I had no idea how to cut them in half!
I started with a huge kitchen knife, that stunk!
Then I moved onto an Exacto Knife. I thought heating it would make it easier but it just took more time.
(that explains the candle in the back)
It took a while but I finally had them all cut in half. Then I painted them with Acrylics, the thicker paints worked better for me. Those small pink ones took like 60 coats! (exaggerating!)

Last but not least, I measured them out precisely (no, I didn't) and glued them to the dress.

The outfit wasn't complete without some shoes!
I hot glued candy dots to some sparkly shoes that I bought for $8 at Walmart.

Here's my baby's final costume.

...and Katy Perry.
Let me point out that I'm not the best seamstress.
I have never attempted to make any kind of clothing before this.
So if it looks a little crooked and wonky in the photos, that's because it is.
But that's okay, it's a costume for my 3 year old and it didn't cost me too much.
How much you ask?
Let me break it down.
1 yard of fabric - $5
2 packs of balls- $8
Paints- $10
Candy- $4
Shoes- $8
= $35
Did I forget something? If I did let me know.
I hope you enjoyed this post as much as I did making it.
Do you know what you're going to be for Halloween, yet?

I'm baaack!

This has been the craziest month so far!
So much has been going on (including my birthday)
and I know I've been slacking when it comes to posting new goodies.
It makes me sad to say that this is my last Halloween post.
It was a great holiday and Mia had a blast.
It's crazy to think that this is her third Halloween and that she'll be 3 years old in just two months.
Let's just reflect on her past Halloweens.
Mia's first Halloween, she was Master Yoda.
She was 10 months old.
This is last years Halloween costume.
She was Brobee from Yo Gabba Gabba.
She was 1 year and 10 months old and you can read more about that here.
This years costume was a little different.
Mostly because it was actually a girl costume.
This year she was Smurfette.
(She's holding her Harry Potter Lego's that she just got from her Grandpa.)
There was a bit of a toss up between being Smurfette or
Batman- a costume she got from her cousin.
The only problem we had with it was that we went out and bought her Smurfette costume and she hadn't worn it once!
But as you can tell, Smurfette prevailed and all was well.

We decided to take Rigby out with us. (Sophia's a barker and doesn't get along well with other animals)
But once we got out his collar, (the one we bought two months ago)
we realized it no longer fit him.
So Rigby went as Sophia this Halloween.
Complete with Bow and all!

So we leashed up Rigby, buckled Mia in her car seat and took those babies trick or treating!

First we took them to a Halloween Carnival with Mia's cousins.
Rigby loved the attention and Mia had lots of fun playing games and winning candy.

For some reason absolutely no one on our street gave out candy.
So we went trick or treating at Mia's Grandpa's house after the carnival.
She had so much fun and I think we all got a bit of a workout.
Then we went to visit Mia's uncle, which is where we took this.

Once we were home, I wanted to take a picture with Mia in her costume.
Here's one from her first Halloween.
The picture above is what I hoped the current picture would look like.

However, I got this.
That's right, photobombed.
Which soon turned into this.
One big photobomb.

Which eventually got us right where I wanted us to be in the first place.
A nice, family picture where we're all smiling and looking pretty.
Well, almost all of us.
It's not the perfect picture, but it's good enough for me.
I hope everyone had a great Halloween complete with lots of family time and treats!
This concludes the Halloween blog posts. Sorry I missed a week.
But what I lacked in Halloween, I will make up for with Christmas.
It's the most wonderful time of the year, I hear.
I'll be back soon with some goodies.

Quick, cheap and easy Halloween decorations.

I haven't quite been able to go all out with Halloween decorations like I planned on.
However, what I did accomplish was done in a single day.
It took a trip to the dollar store and a trip to the thrift store.
All of my inspiration was from Martha Stewart.
Martha Stewart does Halloween it right!

I started out with the pumpkins that I painted here
and some owls(Mia likes to photobomb)

and glass jars that I already had up on the shelves.

From the dollar store I bought a few bags of plastic eyes, a package of small spiders, a package of spider silhouettes, two large spiders, two crows, spiderwebs and some red candlesticks.
(Sorry I didn't take more pictures!)

I purchased four brass candle holders for $2.00, two large brown candle holders for $4.00
and a small, gold frame for $1.00 at the thrift store.

Since we use it so often, we have a large collection of spray paints.
This is one of my favorites.
It's Rust-oleum's flat, black enamel.
Since it's flat it sticks to pretty much any surface.
If you don't like the matte finish, you can also get some of Rust-oleum's Crystal Clear Enamel
and it'll be glossy, just like that!
I really like using matte colors and then spraying over them with clear.
The matte paint works as a primer and makes the gloss stick better and look just a bit shinier than your average gloss spray paint, it also runs less so you wont have as many drips on your surface.
There I go getting carried away with spray paint.

On to the more interesting things.
Here are the shelves I decorated.
Project cost:
Red Candles =$2.00
Brass Candle holders = $2.00
Large Brown Candle holders= $4.00
Gold frame = $1.00
Bags of Eyes = $4.00
Two bags of eyes = $2.00
Bag of Spiders = $1.00
Two Large Spiders = $2.00 ($1.00 each)
Two crows = $2.00 ($1.00 each)
Pumpkins = Already had ($1.00 each at Walmart)
Package of Spider Silhouettes = $1.00
Gold Apples = Already had
Spray paint = Already had
Wreath = from previous post!
Total money spent:  Around $21.00 plus tax
Just under $30 if you count the pumpkins.

This is the first year that I decided to get creative with our decorations.
I planned on doing more, but more projects just kept popping up.
I'm pretty happy with how the shelves turned out.
I've got a few pumpkins and spider silhouettes around the house, but otherwise I think I'm done with decorating for Halloween.
You can bet I'm gonna go crazy for Christmas.
Mia's going to love it just as much as I am!
Speaking of Mia, I realized I didn't mention her in my last post and that just wont do!
So without further ado, here's my baby posing for all of you!

*Also, I'd like to mention that October 16th was the 1 year anniversary of my very first blog post.
You may view that here.
Thank YOU for keeping up with all of my posts and for finding what I say type interesting.
I hope I gave you some kind of inspiration or at least entertainment.
I'd love to have a guest blogger sometime soon so if you have any crafts, diy's, recipes or even rooms you wanna show off let me know!
Thanks again everyone! <3
